Rustic Post and Beam Kitchen Remodel in Sutton, MA
This rustic post and beam home sits on a sizeable lot in the quaint New England town of Sutton, MA. The homeowner has become an “empty nester” and lives with a loveable dog and a few felines. The family has always lived on the same road and the area is certainly where her roots run deep. The decision was made to continue to love the home where her children grew up and make the kitchen continue as the heart of the home, but to update it with a new color palette.
Our team built out a return wall on the right side of the sink to shield the kitchen view from the dining area. The installer worked his craft to bring the cabinets up to the beautiful exposed beams. Crown moulding and a light rail below the cabinets add to the custom look.
The wish list included increasing storage space and changing out antique stand-alone cupboards for custom cabinets that marry the rest of the kitchen. A farm sink with a valance bottom was also on the list. We mimicked the valance on the base of a new, very tall stand-alone utility cabinet and created a cozy reading spot with a window bench. The bench offers a wonderful view of the rolling acres behind the house as well as adding storage.
The piece-de-resistance is the island! The color palette was changed from a very Cranberry room with time-worn wooden floors, to a lighter Antique White with the idea for a pop of color on the island. The island is a beautiful Deep Aegean painted finish. Both the designer and homeowner share a love for all things blue and white. A slide-in range centers this enormous island, which allows the movement and color of the granite to become a show piece. The island also has convenient microwave drawers which are tucked out of the way. The back of the island has two 36” full-door cabinets, 24” deep, which add a tremendous amount of storage and give the look of a wainscot panel without the added cost.
The homeowner states; “When friends come over and see my new kitchen, they ask what would I have done differently?” She says, “not a thing, it’s exactly as I envisioned and I got everything I wanted!”
It was truly a joy seeing this kitchen come to fruition and making her dreams come true.
