Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel in Sterling, MA
This kitchen is within a 1762 farmhouse in a historic country setting of large acreage, including horse barns and a large pond. The family has lived there for 35 years and raised their four children, whom all live nearby. The former kitchen had solid Wood-Mode cabinetry, which served it’s purpose for many years, but became dated and dysfunctional. The homeowner wanted to improve the existing angled island layout and remove the cooktop from there, which gave her very little working space and no work flow. The “Mrs.” is the Matriarch of her busy family of grown children, and eight lovable grandchildren, all of whom visit very frequently. Being a great cook of Italian food and a consummate hostess, her doors are always open to the coming and goings of her large beloved family.
We improved the workspace by expanding the size of the island and wrapping it around an existing chimney. We saved the original open post and beam character and worked to compliment it. The opposite side of the chimney has vast storage in the tall utility cabinet, which is 31” wide, 25” deep and has five wonderful roll out trays for storage and easy access. There is also a base microwave cabinet, preferred over a wall microwave. The double oven aids the homeowner when cooking for her large family. They love to sit at the island and also use the expansive top as a “buffet” when everyone is visiting. We additionally added a serving hutch where an older, dated wood hutch stood. The countertop compliments the rest of the “Fantasy Brown” granite within the kitchen. It is soft and graceful, but a natural material – well suited for an old farmhouse.
One of her lovely daughters was her right-hand gal throughout the kitchen remodel process and installation. A second daughter has just blessed the family with a new baby boy. The gathering of this wonderful family in this new, warm and inviting space shows what we know best: “the kitchen truly is the heart of the home.”
